JAMES (with Strong’s numbers)

The Letter of James the herald*

Index
Introduction

James 1: James, a servant of Yehovah’, and of our Master Yeshua the Messiah; to the twelve tribes dispersed among the nations [1]; greetings. 2 Let it be all joy to you, my brethren, when you enter into many and various trials. 3 For you know that the trial of your faith produces patience. 4 Allow patience to perfect her work, so that you will become complete and perfect, lacking nothing. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, they should ask Yehovah for it, who gives freely to everyone, without reproach; and it will be given them* [846, autos]. 6 But they should ask in faith, not hesitating; he who hesitates is like the waves of the sea that the wind agitates. 7 Dont suppose that that person* [444, anthropos] will receive anything from Yehovah. 8 A double minded man [435, aner] is unstable in all his ways. 9 The depressed brother should rejoice in their elevation; 10 and the rich, in their depression; because they will pass away like the flowering herbs. 11 For the sun rises in its heat, and dries up the herb; and its flower falls, and it’s beautiful appearance perishes: so also the wealthy wither away along their journey. 12 Blessed is the man who endures trials; so that when he is tested for purity, he will receive the crown of life that Yehovah has promised to those who love Him. 13 No one should say, when they are tested, “I am being tested by Yehovah”; for Yehovah is not tempted by evil, nor does He entice anyone to sin. 14 But everyone is enticed when they are seduced by their own cravings, and snared. 15 When these cravings bear indulgences, sin is born; and sin, when mature, brings about death. 16 Make no mistake, my beloved brethren. 17 Every good and perfect gift comes down from above, from the Father of heavenly lights, who never changes, not even a shadow of change. 18 He saw fit, and fathered us by the word of truth; so that we could be the firstfruits of His creatures. 19 Every one of you, my beloved brethren, should be swift to hear, and slow to speak; and slow to wrath; 20 for the wrath of man doesnt produce the righteousness of Yehovah. 21 So remove all impurity far from you, along with the abundance of wickedness; and receive the word that is inborn* [1721] in our nature, with a gentle disposition that is able to endow you with eternal life. 22 But be doers of the word, not just hearers; and dont deceive yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word, but not a doer, they will be like someone who sees their face in a mirror; 24 they see themselves, but pass on, and forget what sort person they are. 25 But everyone who looks into the perfect Law of liberty and does not depart from it, is not a hearer of something to be forgotten, but a doer of those things; and they will be blessed in their work. 26 If anyone thinks that they worship Yehovah, but they dont restrain their tongue, their mind deceives them; their worship is vain. 27 For worship that is pure and holy before Yehovah the Father, is this: to visit the fatherless, and widows in their distress, and to keep themselves unspotted from the world.

[1] And you thought that God lost track of “the lost ten tribes”!

James 2: Brethren, dont uphold the magnificent faith of our Master Yeshua the Messiah with partiality. 2 For if a man with rings of gold or splendid garments comes into your assembly, and a poor man in sordid garments comes in 3 and you show partiality* to the one who is clothed in splendid garments, and tell him, “Sit over here”, conspicuously; while to the poor man, you say, “Stand over there, or sit here before my footstool”; 4 arent you showing partiality, and becoming judges with wicked thoughts? 5 Listen, my beloved brethren; hasnt Yehovah chosen the destitute of the world—but the rich in faith—to be heirs in the Kingdom that Yehovah has promised to those who love Him? 6 But you have despised the destitute man. Dont the rich harshly control* you, and drag you before the tribunals? 7 Dont they blaspheme the worthy name that you were called into? 8 If you actually fulfill the Law of Yehovah, as it is written, “You will love your neighbor as yourself”, you’ll do well: 9 but if you show partiality, you commit sin; and you are convicted by the Law as transgressors of the Law. 10 For whoever keeps the whole Law, yet fails in one point, is guilty of the whole Law. 11 For he who said, “You will not commit adultery”, also said, “You will not murder”. So if you dont commit adultery, but you murder, you have become a transgressor of the Law. 12 So speak and act as people who are to be judged by the Law of liberty. 13 For there will be judgment without mercy for anyone who doesnt show mercy; by mercy, you’ll be raised above judgment. 14 What is the use, my brethren, if a man says, “I have faith”; but he has no works? Can his faith endow him with eternal life? 15 Or if a brother or sister is naked, and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, warm yourselves, and be full”; and you dont give them the necessaries of the body, what is the use? 17 So faith alone, without works, is dead. 18 But someone might say, “You have faith, and I have works”; show to me your faith without works; and I will show you my faith by my works. 19 You believe that there is one God; you do well; but the demons also believe, and tremble. 20 Bear in mind, you *spiritually destitute* [2756] person, that faith without works is dead? 21 Wasnt Abraham our father justified by works in offering his son Isaac on the altar? 22 Dont you see that his faithfulness* aided his works; and that by works his faithfulness was made complete? 23 The Scripture was fulfilled that said: “Abraham *entrusted his fidelity* [4100] to Yehovah, and by this it was determined* [3049] that he was righteous, and he was called the Friend of Yehovah”. 24 So you see that a man is *declared to be righteous* [1344] by works, and not by faithfulness* alone. 25 In the same way Rahab the harlot—wasnt she justified by works, when she entertained the spies, and sent them out by another way? 26 Just as the body without the spirit is dead; so faith without works, is also dead.

James 3: My brethren, not many of you should become teachers, knowing that we are under more intense judgment. 2 For we all make mistakes* [4417] in many things. Whoever doesnt make mistakes in his speech is a perfect man [435], who can also bridle his whole body. 3 Look, we put bridles into the mouths of horses, so that they will obey us; and we turn about their whole body. 4 Also, when strong winds drive huge ships, they are turned around by a small rudder, at the impulse of the helmsman. 5 And while the tongue is a small member, it boasts greatly. Also a little fire inflames large forests. 6 Now the tongue is a fire, and the sinful world is like a forest. And this tongue that is one of our members, can mar our whole body; and it can inflame the course of our lives, and in the end, can set itself on fire. 7 For all kinds of animals and birds and reptiles, of the sea or land, are restrained by the natural ways of humanity. 8 But no one has been able to tame the tongue; it is an evil thing, unrestrained, and full of deadly poison. 9 For with it, we bless the Master and Father; and with it we curse men, who were made in the image of Yehovah. 10 From the same mouth comes curses and blessings. My brethren, these things should not happen. 11 Can fresh and bitter water flow from the same fountain? 12 Or my brethren, can the fig tree bear olives or a vine bear figs? Thus salt water cant be made fresh. 13 Who among you is endued with knowledge? They should prove their good works with gentleness and wisdom. 14 But if there is bitter envy, or contention in your minds, dont boast or lie against the truth. 15 For this wisdom doesnt come down from above; but it is earthly, sensual, and demonic. 16 For wherever envy and contention are, there also is confusion, and every evil action. 17 But the wisdom that is from above, is pure, and full of peace, mild and submissive, full of compassion and of good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. 18 The fruits of righteousness are sown in *cultivated land* [1], by those who make peace.

James 4: Where does fighting and contention among you come from?? Isnt it from the lusts that war in your members? 2 You covet, but dont obtain anything; you murder and envy, and dont obtain anything; you fight and war and you still dont obtain anything, because you dont ask. 3 And when you do ask, and dont obtain anything; because you ask improperly, so that you can squander it on your lusts. 4 You adulterers, dont you know that to befriend* [5373] this *hostile world* [2889] is being opposed to Yehovah? Anyone who chooses to befriend the world opposes Yehovah. 5 Or do you believe that the Scriptures have vainly said, “The human spirit [1] dwelling in us lusts with envy”? 6 But our Master has given us more *merciful kindness* . so he said: The Master humbles the lofty, and gives *merciful kindness* to the lowly. 7 Subject yourselves so to Yehovah; and stand firm against Satan, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to Yehovah, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners: sanctify your hearts, you divided in mind. 9 Humble yourselves, and mourn: let your laughter be turned into mourning, and your joy into grief. 10 Humble yourselves before the Master, and he will exalt you. 11 Speak not against each other, my brethren; for he who speaks against his brother, or judges his brother, speaks against the Law, and judges the Law. And if you judge the Law, you arent a doer of the Law, but its judge. 12 There is one Law-giver and Judge, who can make alive, and can destroy: but who is you, that you judge your neighbor? 13 But what will we say of those, who say: today or tomorrow we will go to such or such a city, and will abide there a year; and we will traffic, and get gain? 14 They know not what will be to-morrow: for what is our life, but an exhalation that is seen a little while, and then vanishes and is gone? 15 Whereas they should say: If the Master please, and we live, we will do this or that. 16 They praise in their vaunting. All such glorying is evil. 17 He who knows the good, and does it not, to him is sin.

James 5: You wealthy people will wail and cry because of the miseries that are coming on you. 2 Because your wealth is destroyed; and your clothing is moth-eaten: 3 and your gold and your silver are tarnished; and their *poisonous venom* will be testimony against you; and it will eat your flesh. Your accumulated wealth will burn in the latter days. 4 Look, the wages of the laborers who have harvested your ground that you have underpaid* [650], cries out; and the clamor of the harvesters has entered the ears of Yehovah of armies*. 5 For you have lived in luxury on earth, living for pleasure, fattening yourselves for the day of slaughter. 6 You have condemned and slain the righteous, and they have not fought* [498] against you. 7 But brethren, be patient until the arrival of the Master; like the farmer who waits for the precious harvest of his ground, patiently waiting for the early and the latter rain. 8 Be just as patient, and strengthen your minds; for the arrival of our Master approaches. 9 Dont complain about each other, brethren, or you will be condemned; because the judge is standing before the door! 10 Brethren, take for example the prophets who spoke in the name of the *Most Supreme [1] Yehovah* , of those patiently enduring suffering. 11 You have heard of the blessings of those who have endured suffering. You have heard of the patience of Job; and you have seen the result that the Most Yehovah did for him; for the Most Yehovah is merciful and compassionate. 12 But above everything, brethren, dont swear; not by heaven, nor by earth, nor any kind of oath. Your Yes” should be “Yes”, and your “No”, “No”, or you could be condemned. 13 If any of you are enduring hardships, you should pray; and anyone who is cheerful should sing psalms. 14 If anyone is sick, they should call for the elders [2] of the Assembly; they should pray for them, and anoint them with oil in the name of our Master. 15 The prayer of faith will restore the sick to health, and our Master will *raise them up from their death bed* [1453]; and if they have committed sins, the sins will be disregarded* [863]. 16 Confess your shortcomings* to each other, and pray for each other, to *eliminate sins* [2390]; for the powerful prayers of righteous people results in powerful* [2480] results. 17 Elijah was also a man with feelings and passions like ours, and he prayed that rain would not fall to the earth; and it didnt rain for three years and six months. 18 He prayed again, and the heavens produced rain, and the earth blossomed, resulting in a harvest. 19 Brethren, if one of you fall from the way of truth [4105], and someone *causes them to return* [1994]; 20 they should understand, that the one who turns a sinner from their wandering, will rescue them from destruction, and rescind a great many sins.

[1] The root word for “kurios” (Strong’s 2962) is “kuros” (supremacy)

[2] The primary meaning of elders is not an office or rank; they are “olders”, older in the faith.
